Orthodontics / Braces are one of the things you can do for your kids to insure their health throughout their lifetime. Braces are not only for kids. Presently, 20% of the orthodontic patients are over 18; people as old as 60 have had successful orthodontic treatment.
Orthodontic treatment can improve your dental health and change your facial appearance for the better, and it can boost your self-esteem.
It can provide you with the chance to participate in improving the way you look. Patients often feel more self-confident even before treatment is completed. Yes – teeth can be moved at any age, and in fact, approximately 25% of all patients with braces on are adults – i.e. 18 years or over. There are, on occasion, some limitations and increased risks associated with adult orthodontics, but most often beautiful results can be attained.
The best person to evaluate the possibility of orthodontics for an individual is the orthodontist. Often, at the initial consultation appointment, a preliminary evaluation and treatment plan can be established. This is then followed up with models of the teeth and various x-rays are taken to check bone health and jaw size. Treatment required can vary greatly, possibly requiring extractions removable bite plates, braces on either upper and/or lower teeth, and occasionally elastics. The braces themselves have become more esthetics over the last 20 years, becoming smaller and less obvious in fact, clear plastic or ceramic braces can often be used.
Usually a few days to a week to adjust to the braces and similarly after any adjustment appointments, discomfort is normal. Softer foods are recommended after each adjustment.
The doctor will explain any significant risks related to your treatment. Most risks relate to the health of your gums and bones before treatment and your oral hygiene during treatment.
Today’s options are not like the train tracks of yesteryear. Many new materials decrease the time for many patients. Invisible trays and invisible types which are placed behind the teeth, called “Invisalign”.
Removable trays made of clear plastic like materials can effectively move the teeth as long as they are worn for the recommended amount of time. Results have been seen from 6 months to 1.5 years in average cases.
